With school work over for the day – it was 11:30am – it was time for some fun. We loaded the bike onto the trailer and headed to Shorncliffe for a leisurely 20km ride. Bev (Les’ Mum) bought us a book with short rides all around Brisbane and the Coasts. Kady and Erin thought the bike track was perfectly designed with about 10 playgrounds within the 20km and it was very flat!

WOW.This was a great discovery that we will return to.

Map of the entire path
- We started at a park on the Shorncliffe hill. Err… only 30m tall, but still a hill.
- Sandgate Pier; nice beach
- Sandgate bike path
- Nice wide dedicated bike and pedestrian path
- Houghton Highway, our means to cross Bramble Bay.
- Action shot, cycling across the Houghton Highway
- Foreshore sustained some damage from the recent storm. Cleaning up is going well
- Contemporary vs Colonial architecture.
- Scarborough Park… the end of our wonderful afternoon
We hadn’t been to this part of Brisbane for years and we were both impressed with the place. The path took us through many parks with fantastic playgrounds. Toilets were about every 3km – great when riding with kids.
Riding across the Hornibrook Bridge was a highlight. The kids loved it. The path was completely separate from the road so they had a bit more freedom. Shade sails and trees provided plenty of shade for muesli bar stops.
Our only regret…we didn’t bring our togs. There were so many swimming opportunities.
On a separate note, we took our dog Scrappy on this ride. He was towed behind the Vivente and seemed pretty happy. I think my quadriceps may pay for towing our furry friend.
Thanks to Bev and Fred for being our support team at the end of the track. It saved riding another 50km back to Toorbul!
We are keen to try the entire path from Caboolture through to Wynnum. This will be an undertaking for another day.

Wow! Sounds like a great afternoon. I’ll bet Scrappy enjoyed being towed along by his Mistress, Riding across the Hornibrook would have been a special highlight. I remember the old Hornibrook Highway from the early 1950s and then again in the late 60s when we used to visit Dad’s sister, Auntie Connie, at Redcliffe (or more precisely Margate). I think thetimes jenny and I went to see her in the late 70s/early 80s we were on the “new” Hornibrook Highway. The photos are great!
But gee! NO COFFEE!!??!!

It was a fantastic ride. My personal favourite part of the ride was the bridge. Kady and I were riding together across the bridge and because I couldn’t take my iPad I zipped my iPod in the back of my shirt so poor Kady we were listening to a lot of One Direction.

At least you were heading in the right direction on your bikes.
